Koi Pond – Special Considerations

Koi are Japanese ornamental carp that are kept and bred as a hobby and as a profession. They grow quite large and can live a long time.

Aside from this, there are hundreds of varieties of Koi. Collectors usually like to own many varieties of the fish, and a small pond can get crowded fast.

To compensate for the future growth of Koi and the propensity of Koi growers to try to collect as many varieties as they can, a bigger pond is a main consideration when building a Koi Pond.

Size does matter, but so does location. A Koi Pond must be built in a shady spot in your yard; this again is in consideration of the fish.

They will have a more comfortable home if the pond is situated away from direct sunlight.

A perfect spot would be one away from the bustle of daily living but near enough to be seen and enjoyed from the main house.

Trees are also a concern for a Koi Pond. Falling leaves should be far from pond water, or a maintenance problem will persistently present itself.

Koi are different from goldfish. Since goldfish do not eat plants as Koi do, a goldfish pond can be host to water plants as well.

Smaller ponds are also possible with goldfish as they are not known to grow as large as Koi. These are the differences between a Koi pond and a goldfish pond.

Another type of pond is the garden pond. This type of pond is built mainly for keeping water plants.

These plants are able to share the space with goldfish, but not with Koi. For the keepers of Koi, a specialized Koi Pond is ideal and necessary for the proper caring of this special fish.
