It should be spacious enough so that the fish would have enough room to grow. You might want to consider that the fish would eventually multiply in number.  It does not necessary mean they will be commercialized. Regardless of the reason of breeding the fish, it would be better to pre-plan. The space should be enough so that the fish could survive and multiply. For a backyard pond, the good location is usually the garden. Make sure that the location is away from where there will be heavy objects like debris or lots of leaves might fall into the pond.

Test the ground. Create a hole and pour water in it. If the water is easy filled out, then the ground is not suitable for a fish pond. However, it does not mean that we can not use that particular spot anymore. We still can. All we have to do is to cover the ground with plastic. Make sure every corner is covered. Then put sand and concrete. The concrete should be of fair amount only. It is important that the particles you put in will fill out the whole ground. Make it look as natural as possible.

This process will be done only if the ground is not fitting for a fish pond. If it took a lot of time to fill out the water in the hole, then the location fits for a fish pond. If this is the situation, just dig deeper to create a larger hole. Make sure that the desired area for the fish pond is completely covered.

Put water in the pond. You may use a hose to fill up the pond. Make sure that the water is neutralized from any chemical included in the water. It would be better to dechlorinate the water before you fill it in the pond. The purpose is to make sure your fish and plants would not die. Place the land plants to their designated position. Make sure the roots are protected. The plants might die if their roots are not properly planted.

Give a few minutes before you put the fish. Choose those fish that will not consume each other. You may also want to include cleaner fish. These types of fish would make sure the bottom of your pond is cleaned regularly.

Remember to change at least 20% of your water at least twice a week. Swap the old water with tap water. Consider getting an air filter as well so as to allow more oxygen in the water. It would be advisable to get more than one species of fish as well.

By now, you already know how to build a fish pond. You will be needing patience when building it because it can not be done in one sitting. However, the outcome is surely worth it. Keeping a fish pond can be refreshing. Enjoy building your fish pond.
